geography

The Kasberg is an eight kilometer long mountain ridge rising from east to west with steep walls, wide hollows, forests and meadows. The boundary runs from Grünau im Almtal along the Grünaubach to the east, then along the Schindlbach to the southeast to Kote 645. From there, the border follows the Schwarzaubach eastwards to the Wasserboden and to the south to Kote 740 via Höbach to Steyrling . From there up to about 1 km southwest of the Bernerau to the valley floor or the marked path over the Ringhütte and the Ring to the Almtaler Haus . From there the border runs along the Straneggbach to the northwest through the Hetzau to the Alm and follows this northwards to Grünau im Almtal. Its highest elevations are the Kasberg summit 1747  m above sea level. A. , the Rossschopf 1647  m above sea level. A. , the swallow wall 1657  m above sea level. A. and the Spitzplaneck 1617  m above sea level. A.

Administratively, the Kasberg is located on the border between the two Upper Austrian districts of Gmunden and Kirchdorf an der Krems .

From the west, the private old toll road leads from the Cumberland Wildlife Park to the Kasbergalmhütte at 1500  m above sea level. A. . In the north a toll road leads to the Hochberghaus.

geology

The summit region of the Kasberg is made of Gutensteiner lime ( anisium ), which are placed on a base made of main dolomite ( norium ).

caves

The Kasberg, whose plateau area made up of Central Triassic limestone offers good conditions for cave formation, has only a few small ice caves to offer for the time being. The spatial shapes of the ice-free Röllkar cave, currently the longest cave in the area, reflect the pronounced thin banks of the dark Middle Triassic limestone. As of 2002 there are 15 caves in the cadastral group 1661 (Kasberg) of the Austrian cave directory.

The Kasbergschwaig 1506  m on the Grünauer Kasbergalm was used for tourist purposes as early as the 19th century . In 1902 it was expanded into an accommodation house. In 1959 it was sold to the Wels section of the Austrian Alpine Club and renamed the Sepp-Huber-Hütte . In 1984 it was sold again by the Alpine Club. In the east of the massif, south of the swallow wall, are the Steyrer Hütte 1347  m of the Naturfreunde and the Ahornalmhütte 1336  m of the Alpine Club. In 1969 the Hochberghaus was built north of the Farrenaubühel (Hochberg) .

The summit of the Kasberg is often visited in summer as well as in winter because of its excellent view. Due to the unobstructed view to the south of the northern slopes of the Dead Mountains from the Kleiner Priel to the Hohe Schrott , the Kasberg is also known as the “viewing platform in front of the Dead Mountains”. At the summit there is a summit cross with a summit book.

The marked and signposted network of trails on the Kasberg is maintained by the Austrian Alpine Club and nature lovers . The most famous climbs are

  • Path 431: From Grünau via the Hochberghaus via the Farrenau to the Sepp-Huber-Hütte, further east and finally from the north to the summit. Walking time: about 2½ to 3 hours.
  • Path 433: From the Brunnental near Steyrling east of the mountain range through the Katzengraben to the Steyrer Hut der Naturfreunde, finally from the southeast to the summit. 1200 meters difference in altitude, walking time: about 3½ hours.

Winter sports

The Kasberg ski area, which includes the Hochberg and Jagerspitz peaks as well as parts of the former Kasbergschwaig , but not the Kasberg summit itself, is accessible by an 8-person monocable gondola, a gondola lift, a 4-person chairlift with a weather protection cover, nine drag lifts, two Practice lifts and a magic carpet developed.

Length of the runs:

  • 20 km easy
  • 17 km medium
  • 3 km difficult

Altitude: 620 to 1600 m

The ski area has existed since 1967. In 2010 it had to file for bankruptcy, the two companies Kasberg-Bahnen  GmbH and Kasberg-Bahnen GmbH & Co KG had accumulated debts of around € 20 million. The previous tenant, the Hinterstoder-Wurzeralm Bergbahnen of the Schröcksnadel Group , took over  60% of the company as Kasberg-Bahnen HWB- Betriebs GmbH, 40% was taken over by the private foundation association for site maintenance in Upper Austria .
