As an urban architect, Hassel had a strong influence on the urban development of Bergen. He designed several of the large central schools in Bergen that are still in use today. The former central slaughterhouse, which is now used as a residential and office building, several buildings of the Haukeland Sykehus and the first communal apartments in Rothaugen were built according to Hassel's drawings. The schools Rothaugen Skole (1910) and Møhlenpris Skole (1911) were built according to the German model and were considered to be particularly progressive in their division and were characterized by a high quality of construction. Among his later works, Fridalen Skole stands out in the Art Deco style , which when it was built was the largest primary school in Norway with around 2,400 pupils.
