Katharina Michaela of Spain
Katharina Michaela of Spain (in Spanish: Catalina Micaela de Austria) (born October 10, 1567 in Madrid , † November 6, 1597 in Turin ) was Infanta of Spain and Duchess of Savoy .
Life
Katharina Michaela of Spain was born in Madrid as the second daughter of the Spanish king Philip II of the Spanish line of the Habsburgs and his third wife Elisabeth of Valois . The infant was named after his maternal grandmother, Catherine de Medici , and St. Michael . However, she lost her mother at an early age as a result of a premature birth and grew up with her sister, Isabella Clara Eugenia of Spain , who was one year older than her nurse Maria de Messa, at her father's Spanish royal court.
For dynastic reasons, her father married his niece Anna of Austria , daughter of Emperor Maximilian II of Austria and his sister Maria of Spain, a fourth marriage . Anna von Österreich took care of her two stepdaughters and became a caring mother for the two girls. In 1578 Queen Anna gave her husband the longed-for heir, Philip III. of Spain , thus securing the succession to the throne. The birth of the heir to the throne did not, however, destroy the close bond between Philip II and his two daughters from his marriage to his beloved late wife Elisabeth von Valois. The monarch, who was rather silent and described as cold-hearted, loved these two daughters more than anyone else around him throughout his life.
One can read about his affectionate feelings towards them especially in the countless letters he sent them between 1581 and 1583 during his absence from Spain. So he wrote the following to his daughters from Lisbon on January 15, 1582 : “I hear that you are all doing well - that is wonderful news for me! When your little sister [Maria (1580–1583), child from his fourth marriage] has her first milk teeth, it seems a bit premature to me: it should be a replacement for the two teeth that I am about to lose - if I arrive over there (in Spain), I will hardly have them anymore! If I can't find any other reason to complain, that's fine with me ... The other day they brought me what is packed in the box below, allegedly a sweet lime. I mean, of course, it's just a lime, but I wanted to send it to you. But if it really should be a sweet lime, then I've never seen one that big. I don't know if it will arrive over there (in Spain) in good condition; but when you get it and it is still fresh, you must taste it and then let me know how it tastes; because I just can't believe that a sweet lime can grow to such a size. So I would be happy if you would let me know. The little lime that is included is only supposed to help fill the box. I am sending you roses and an orange blossom at the same time, so that you can see that there are such things here ... "These letters were signed with" Your good father ".
Katharina Michaela of Spain finally married Duke Charles Emanuel I of Savoy in Saragossa on March 18, 1585 and left the Spanish court. Katharina was never to see her father again after the wedding. Despite the separation, she remained in close correspondence with her father and her Spanish family until her death. In contrast to her childless sister, Katharina gave birth to her husband 10 children and was in different circumstances for most of her married life. Katharina Michaela died at the age of 30 on November 6, 1597 in Turin of the consequences of a premature birth, one year after the birth of her last child - of Thomas Franz , the grandfather of Eugen Franz von Savoyen-Carignan ; better known as Prince Eugene of Savoy.
