Queen Katharina Leszczyńska, née Opalińska

Katharina Opalińska ( Polish: Katarzyna Opalińska ; born October 13, 1680 in Posen ; † March 19, 1747 in Lunéville ) was Queen of Poland , Grand Duchess of Lithuania , Duchess of Lorraine and Bar through marriage to Stanislaus I. Leszczyński . She came from the noble family of Opalińskis .

Life

She was born in Poznan as the daughter of Count Jan Karol Opaliński and his wife Zofia Czarnkowska.

In May 1698 she married Stanislaus I. Leszczyński in Kraków, who was elected head of state of Poland-Lithuania from 1704 to 1709 and 1733 to 1736 . The couple had two daughters:

On October 4, 1704, Stanislaus and Catherine were crowned King and Queen of Poland in the Warsaw Cathedral. Four years later, her husband was overthrown. The couple lived in Stettin from 1709 to 1711 and in Kristianstad, Sweden from 1711 to 1714 . After staying in Germany, they finally settled in Wissembourg in France. After their daughter's marriage to the French king, they received Chambord Castle as a residential palace . In 1737 her husband was made Duke of Lorraine and Bar and they lived from then on in Lunéville in Lorraine.

Katharina died on March 19, 1747, she was buried in Nancy in the church Notre-Dame de Bon Secours at the side of her husband and the heart of her daughter, the French queen.
