The Cathedral of St. Joseph ( Romanian Catedrala Sfântul Iosif ) in the Romanian capital Bucharest is the episcopal church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Bucharest . It was 1875-1883 according to the plans of the then famous Viennese architect Friedrich von Schmidt built, on February 15, 1884. Archbishop Ignatius Paoli ordained and is considered a historical architectural monument.

history

The Roman Catholic community in Bucharest grew from the middle of the 19th century, mainly due to immigrants from Western, Central and Southern Europe. Pope Leo XIII. signed the apostolic letter Praecipuum munus on April 27, 1883 , in which he declared the Apostolic Vicariate of Wallachia an archbishopric and promoted Ignatius Paoli to the rank of archbishop, who inaugurated the cathedral on Friday, February 15, 1884. However, the archbishop's chair was initially vacant for religious reasons, and then after World War II due to pressure from the communist regime .

The cathedral was badly hit in the bombing of Bucharest in 1944. She suffered multiple earthquake damage , the most severe in the earthquake of 1977 , and large parts of the interior were destroyed.

The Cathedral Plaza , a 19-story office building, has been under construction since 2005, a few meters from the cathedral . Due to the unclear approval situation, the visual impairment and the risk of earthquakes, the work was interrupted after an objection by the archdiocese in 2008, but resumed at the end of 2009.

The Court of Appeal in Suceava decided on July 12, 2011 in the last instance that the Cathedral Plaza property had been illegally built and had to be demolished. The Lord Mayor of Bucharest Sorin Oprescu is responsible for the demolition .

architecture

The St. Joseph's Cathedral is an essentially neo-Romanesque brick - Basilica , mixed with neo-Gothic elements, without transept and tower. The structure of the walls is highlighted by white plastered surfaces. A lower, recessed choir adjoins the three-aisled , five-bay nave in the south . The portal facade on the north side contains a large rose window .
