The Catholic Church of St. Cross, St. Peter and St. Nikolaus at Kirchenstraße 9 in Beindersheim is a neo-baroque plastered building that is architecturally based on Upper Bavarian models.

History and description of the building

The church was built in 1914–1916 according to plans by the Mannheim architect Wendelin Leonhardt on the site of the former Catholic rectory (from 1832 school house). The foundation stone was laid on the second day of Easter. The architectural style corresponded to the design tendency towards baroque forms which was customary at the time; The fact that the Palatinate was administratively part of Bavaria at that time and the building is therefore based on local churches may also have played a role in the specific design. Up to this point in time, the Catholic community in Beindersheim had used a simultaneous church , today's Protestant Church , together with the Protestants .

The two-part portal in the south end of the church has a richly sculptured sandstone structure and is accessible from the outside through an outside staircase . To the west of this on the side wall of the church is the bell tower , which has an octagonal bell storey and a tail hood with a lantern. There is a Lady Chapel on the ground floor of this tower. On the other side of the portal, at the southeast end of the church, there is a semicircular stair tower that is significantly lower than the bell tower, but has a similar roof finish.

The hall structure of the church itself is structured by belts and rusticated pilasters . Originally, empty mirrors framed with stucco were set into the ceiling . At the north end of the nave there is a semicircular apse behind a triumphal arch , with single-storey additions on both sides. The bulging wooden gallery is at the opposite end of the church, in the south above the main entrance. It contains the romantic, pneumatically operated organ , which is located in a neo-baroque case.

The interior of the building comes partly from the previously used simultaneous church, for example the four-column high altar made of stone in the apse from around 1750, which shows the two saints Peter and Paul and numerous angel figures in oil paintings . The wooden pulpit was also built around this time, although it comes from the Catholic parish church in Heßheim . Also worth seeing are the ornate figural window panes, which show various stages in the life of St. Peter. In 1703 the wooden body (body of the crucified) of a crucifix was made , which was originally also in the previous building, the simultaneous church on the site of the current Protestant church. In contrast, the confessional , the seating and the wooden stations of the cross , which were created in 1919 by Simon Höpfel (Speyer), were only created in the course of the new building at the beginning of the 20th century . The two side altars also date from this period.

The Marienkirche in the bell tower contains a wooden Pietà , which, like the high altar in the main church, was probably made in the middle of the 18th century, but may even go back to a model from the 14th century. It was also taken over from the former simultaneous church.

In the years 2002–2003 the interior of the Catholic Church was extensively renovated and has been used for church celebrations ever since. On the left outside of the church, a Marian column was erected in 2009, inviting you to prayer and linger.
