The Holy Cross Church in Nidzica ( German  Neidenburg ) dates from the middle of the 19th century and was a Roman Catholic church in Masuria in East Prussia until 1948 . Since then, it has been a Protestant parish church in the Polish district town of Nidzica in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship .

Geographical location

Nidzica is located in the southwest of the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship and is a traffic junction on Expressway 7 ( European Route 77 ) and Voivodeship roads 538 , 545 and 604 . The city is a train station on the Działdowo – Olsztyn railway line ( German  Soldau – Allenstein ).

The Holy Cross Church is located not far from the Ordensburg in the eastern city center.

The church behind the castle was built by the Catholics who settled here at the beginning of the 19th century. A parish was established here in 1854, and construction of the church began in 1858. After two years of construction, it was completed and received on June 3, 1860 - the Immaculate Conception dedicated - the consecration . The tower was added in 1890/92.

The church, built in neo-Gothic style, was made of field and hewn bricks . The nave stands on a rectangular plan and is covered with a gable roof. The tower, added later, is made of bricks up to the top, which is crowned with a ball and a cross.

The interior of the church is covered with a wooden coffered ceiling. Numerous valuable objects of sacred art make up the equipment, several of which come from other Lutheran churches in Masuria after 1948 , such as pictures painted on wood from the 15th century and a triptych from 1646. The central picture of the altar shows the crucified. In addition, the figures of the four evangelists adorn the altar. Numerous canvas paintings, mostly with biblical scenes, decorate the walls of the church. Contemporary art is represented by three paintings by the Polish painter Hieronim Skurpski (1914–2006). In the anteroom there is a figure of the crucified Christ from the 18th century. It comes from the church in Burkat (Borchersdorf) .

The building served the Catholics as a place of worship until 1948. The decreasing number of Protestant church members due to flight and expulsion in connection with the Second World War and the associated growing number of Roman Catholic new settlers prompted the two churches to swap their places of worship : the previous Protestant parish church was renamed the Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. St. Adalbert's house of worship for the Catholics, and the previously Roman Catholic parish church of the Immaculate Conception of Mary a Protestant house of God: now as the Holy Cross Church .

Parish

Roman Catholic

Since 1854 there was a Roman Catholic parish in Neidenburg, whose parish church became the church, consecrated in 1860. Neidenburg was a parish in the deanery Pomesanien with seat in Osterode (Polish Ostróda ) and belonged to the diocese of Warmia at that time .

After the church was taken over by the Evangelical Augsburg Church in Poland , various building measures and changes were necessary. The Diaspora Church received financial resources from abroad. In addition, Lutheran parishes in Masuria donated items of equipment for the Holy Cross Church.

The simple church building is today one of 15 parish churches of the Polish Evangelical-Augsburg Church in the diocese of Masuria , which has its official seat in Olsztyn (Allenstein) . However, this changes with the parish seat of the bishop and has therefore been in Kętrzyn (Rastenburg) , the official seat of the incumbent Bishop Paweł home, since 2018 .

The parish church in the town now called Nidzica has three affiliate churches : Gardyny ( Gardienen ) , Jabłonka (Jablonken , 1938 to 1945 Seehag ) and Róg (rye) .
