The Church of St. Bruno in German Lötzen ( Giżycko ) is one of the few church buildings from the time of National Socialism in Germany. Until 1945 it was the only Catholic church in the Lötzen district and today it is one of many parish churches in the city and in the rural community of Giżycko in the Polish Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship .
Geographical location
The city of Giżycko is located in the north-east of the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship in the Masurian Lake District ( Pojezierze Mazurskie in Polish ) between the Wall Lake (Jezioro Mamry) and the Lion Lake (Jezioro Niegocini). The Church of St. Bruno is located in the northern residential area on ulica Pionierska in the immediate vicinity of the Church “Św. Kazimierza Królewicza ”.
Church building
After several centuries of being deprived of their own place of worship in Lötzen, the Catholic church members were finally able to breathe a sigh of relief: On August 23, 1936 the foundation stone was laid for a new church. It was to replace the much too small chapel in the village , which was built from 1907 to 1909 .
In a construction time of only one year, the building was built according to the plans of the architect Martin Weber from Frankfurt am Main under the local construction management of the Lötzen architect Franz Lebzelter . The new church was consecrated on August 8, 1937 and was placed under the patronage of the bishop and martyr Brun von Querfurt , who presumably died near Lötzen .
The building, which is also "Saint-Bruno Memorial Church" was called, it was a solidly built building plastered with laterally projecting, but the nave superior only with the roof-mounted tower . The original sgraffito on the gable side from 1937 with the depiction of Saint Bruno between a knight and a soldier by Theo M. Landmann , a native of Danzig, was removed in 1945 and replaced by a new work.
Parish
Since June 20, 1910, there was a Roman Catholic community in Lötzen . Until then, the church members were looked after by Rößel ( Reszel in Polish ). In earlier centuries clergy from the Holy Linden Monastery (Swięta Lipka) took care of the supplies.
The parish of Lötzen was incorporated into the Deanery of Masuria II with its seat in Johannisburg (Pisz) within the Diocese of Warmia until 1945 . Your parish included 179 places, towns and places of residence.
Today is the parafia pw św. Brunona Biskupa i Męczennika ("Parish of St. Bruno, the Bishop and Martyr") one of five Catholic churches in the town of Giżycko , plus three other churches (with two chapels) in Gmina Giżycko . They belong to two deanery districts in Giżycko . The parish church of St. Bruno is in the deanery district Giżycko - św. Szczepana Męczennika ("St. Stephen, Martyr") incorporated into the Diocese of Ełk (Lyck) of the Roman Catholic Church in Poland .
