Catholic men's association Tuntenhausen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Tuntenhausen Catholic Men's Association (KMVT) is a conservative association for Catholic men founded in 1945 by Alois Hundhammer . The association is considered to be the heart of political Catholicism in the Free State of Bavaria . Since its foundation, the association has consistently been closely linked to the management bodies of the CSU in terms of personnel and programs , in particular fundamentally integrates their conservative-clerical wing and is considered the party's think tank .

Since its founding, the association has always been chaired by prominent CSU politicians. In 2008 the association had around 1000 members. The purpose of the association is to “work in public for the deepening of the Catholic life of faith and to bring the Catholic principles to bear”. Marcel Huber has been chairman of the association since the end of 2009 .

The association sees itself as a continuation of the Bavarian Patriotic Farmers Association, which was also founded in Tuntenhausen in 1869 . This had liquidated itself on July 27, 1933 with around 5000 members in Rosenheim under pressure from the National Socialists. Before its self-dissolution, the association was very closely associated with the Bavarian People's Party .

The re-establishment of the association in the first months after the Second World War goes back to an initiative of the Tuntenhausen pastor Innozenz Lampl and the auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising Anton Scharnagl . There were very close personal continuities between the two clubs. Alois Hundhammer, who subsequently held this role for almost 30 years, became the first association chairman. For the first public appearance of the association at the basilica celebration on Pentecost in 1946, various prominent CSU politicians came to the pilgrimage, among them Franz Josef Strauss , and gave speeches.

In the decades that followed, the association's activities and discourse continued to focus on controversial CSU topics with Christian connotations, such as the discussions about the introduction of the birth control pill , the reform of Paragraph 218 of the Criminal Code , the alleged AIDS risk posed by homosexuals , and the battle for crucifixes in classrooms and the stem cell research controversy .

Memberships and connections to the association have been cited in the German media for decades as a clear indication of the strongly conservative Christian attitudes of prominent politicians.

Thomas Goppel declared in Tuntenhausen 1992: “There is nothing more unifying than kneeling next to each other, head to head, with folded hands on the prayer bench.” In the same year, the news magazine Der Spiegel described the association as “[…] a symbiotic alliance of Catholicism Clergy and the fundamentalist wing of the CSU [...] ”.

The closeness between the leadership of the Catholic Church in Bavaria and the event, which has existed for decades, continues. In April 2010 the Archbishop of Munich and Freising, Reinhard Marx , again emphasized the unity with the Catholic wing of the CSU in Tuntenhausen. In March 2011, the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising offered an e-mail address for the diocese on its website, at which the office of the men's association could be reached directly for information on memberships.

Annual meeting

The members of the association traditionally meet twice a year for pilgrimage services in the Tuntenhausen pilgrimage church . In addition to the spring conference (every last Sunday in April), another annual meeting, the autumn conference (every last Sunday in September), takes place. After attending holy mass in the Tuntenhausen church, the process always provides for a morning drink in the festival hall of the Schmid inn. Due to their often polarizing content, the political speeches have been echoing in the national media since the late 1950s at the latest.

Offer of membership to Pope Benedict XVI.

Since Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger had repeatedly participated in the pilgrimage events, the association sent him a brochure with an application for membership and an offer to become the 1000th member of the association after his appointment as Pope . In a reply from the Vatican in 2006, Pope Benedict XVI. could not comply with the request, since personal affiliations in private, cultural and social organizations do not correspond to the practice of the office.
