Kathrein dance

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Kathrein dance forms on the last Saturday before November 25, the completion of the folklore traditional dance season. This custom is cultivated in the German-speaking Alpine countries and in the Franconian region.

history

The name goes back to Saint Catherine of Alexandria , whose feast day is November 25th, one of the last saints' feasts before Advent . Advent serves (analogous to Lent before Easter ) as a time of penance and a so-called closed time to prepare for Christmas. In these closed times, public dance events were previously prohibited. The saying goes down in the vernacular: “Kathrein stops dancing”. From the Kathrein day up to and including the apparition of the Lord , “bass and violins were locked up”.

This ban on dancing is largely history; In the German-speaking countries, it is only valid for the so-called silent days by law . However, the tradition of dancing-free times in the folk dance scene is continued; In many places, the last dance festival in November is a Kathrein dance, often organized by the Heimatverein, the traditional costume association or the folk music group . Here mostly traditional folk dances (such as waltzes , lathe , polka , Scottish , Boarischer , Zwiefacher ) are played and danced.

After years in the Löwenbräukeller, the Kathrein dance is now taking place in the ballrooms of the Hofbräuhaus . As a preparation, a few practice evenings will be offered from summer. Also in connection with the traditional costume boom, with the popularity of the Kocherlball and with the engagement of young dance masters, a rejuvenation of the participants could be achieved.
