Katie-George Dunlevy (born November 26, 1981 in Crawley , United Kingdom ) is an Irish paracycler .

Athletic career

When Katie-George Dunlevy was 11 years old, she was diagnosed with retinopathia pigmentosa , a progressive genetic retinal degeneration . She is visually impaired with ten percent eyesight.

Dunlevy began her athletic career as a pararuder for the UK. In 2004 and 2005 she became world champion in the LTAMix4 + class (mixed foursome with helmsman / woman). But she could not qualify for the 2011 World Rowing Championships or the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London . As a result, she was suggested by the sports director of the Irish Cycling Federation, Brian Nugent , to switch to cycling and to start for the country of birth of her father, who comes from Donegal, Ireland .

Katie-George has been racing as a paracycler (class B) on the tandem , on track and road since 2013 . Together with her pilot Eve McCrystal , she has since won numerous medals at world rail and road championships . Her greatest achievement was two medals at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro , when she won gold in the individual time trial and silver in the road race.
