Katrin Johanna Neumann (born October 1, 1961 in Meiningen ) is a German specialist in the medical field of phoniatry and pediatric audiology and professor at the Ruhr University in Bochum . Her research focuses on hearing impairments in children, stuttering and speech development in children.

Career

Katrin Neumann grew up as the first of three children up to the age of 20 in Meiningen and attended school there. Since she originally wanted to be a professional musician, she learned to play the cello over many years and received singing lessons.

In 1981 she began to study human medicine at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig . After graduating in 1987, she worked as a research assistant in the neurophysiology department at the University's Institute of Physiology. Neumann wrote her diploma thesis towards the end of her studies on the subject of "learning computers / learning programs in physiology training for medical students".

In 1988 she moved to the Hornheide specialist clinic in Münster. Neumann now worked there as an assistant doctor in the plastic surgery department , which she said she did not do. In 1991 she wrote her dissertation on the subject of "Dendrite development using the example of neurons of the superior colliculus of cats and rats" at the Institute for Physiology at the University of Leipzig and in the same year moved to Wiesbaden to the Dr. Horst Schmidt clinics there . Here she trained to become a specialist in ear, nose and throat medicine until 1996 . In 1997, Neumann went to the University Clinic in Frankfurt am Main in order to be trained there for a further three years as a specialist in phoniatrics and pediatric audiology. In the field of phoniatry, her profession and her musicality could be combined. In 2000 she became a senior physician at the Clinic for Phoniatrics and Pediatric Audiology at the University Hospital Frankfurt am Main. In 2005 , Katrin Neumann completed her habilitation on “Cerebral Correlates of Stuttering in FMRI and their Therapy-Induced Changes”. From September 2005 she worked for some time as an associate professor and from 2007 as a visiting professor in the Phoniatrics Department of the Universitair Medisch Centrum Utrecht as a lecturer in the master's degree in "Logopedic Science". In May 2007 Neumann became professor of phoniatrics and pediatric audiology at the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main .

Newborn hearing screening was introduced in Hesse with the major contribution of Katrin Neumann .

From 2012 to 2019 she was the head physician in the department for phoniatrics and pediatric audiology at the St. Elisabeth Hospital (University Clinic for Ear, Nose and Throat Medicine) and the CI Center in the Ruhr Area in Bochum. In 2020, Katrin Neumann moved to the University Hospital Münster , where she is director of the Clinic for Phoniatrics and Pediatric Audiology.

Katrin Neumann is currently working on the 2k guideline for improving the therapy of speech development disorders of the German Society for Phoniatrics and Pediatric Audiology (DGPP), the completion of which is planned for 2020.

Several times a year, mostly in her free time, Katrin Neumann travels to developing countries . There she trains junior physicians in pediatric audiology so that hearing screenings can be carried out on all newborns .

Katrin Neumann is the mother of three adult children.
