When the railway company decided to discontinue railway operations between Machens in St. Charles County and Sedalia in Pettis County in 1986, the opportunity arose to create an exceptional recreational area for hikers and cyclists. In April 1990 the first section with a length of six and a half kilometers was opened. By 1991, more former railroad kilometers could be connected by the Union Pacific Railroad and placed under the administration of the Department of Natural Resources. The name Katy is derived from the English pronunciation of the abbreviated letters K and T.

Most of it follows the course of the Missouri River so that the river and riverbank with their flora and fauna are often in sight. Different forms of landscape with dense forests, wetlands , deeply cut valleys, remnants of the prairie , pastures and farmland alternate. Dogwood species and Judas trees bloom in spring , while the red-orange-yellow color spectrum of the autumn leaves of sugar maple and various Rhus species dominate half a year later. Tits , nuthatches , thrushes , oriole and various woodpeckers are common.

Red-tailed buzzard and turkey vulture often fly over the area, and bald eagles are featured as winter visitors. The nearby Missouri also attracts waterfowl and migratory birds. Great blue herons , Canada geese , snipe birds and belt fishermen can be seen on the water.
