Katz'scher garden

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Katz'sche Garten is a baroque and sculpture garden in Gernsbach in the northern Black Forest .

history

Fountain made of wrought iron arches with the symbolic gold-plated globe. Baroque / Rococo, ca.1750

The Katz'sche garden was laid out at the beginning of the 19th century by an Italian master horticulturist and is located on the banks of the Murg opposite the villa of the Murg boatmen family Katz, which was built by Friedrich Weinbrenner from 1797 to 1813.

Some of the original trees from the 19th century have been preserved to this day and are therefore extremely valuable, including a bald cypress from Florida and two magnolia trees , which are said to be among the oldest in Germany and north of the Alps.

The Gernsbach master builder Adolf Abel (not to be confused with the architect Adolf Abel ) extended the garden to the north in 1846. For this extension, an outbuilding with horse stables had to be replaced by a tea house. Due to its classical style, this tea house became the center of the path axes in the garden. Today it has been restored and serves as a garden pavilion.

During the Baden Revolution in 1849, the garden on the Murg bank side served the Prussian troops as a battle post.

The Katz'sche Garten was significantly shaped by Johanna Katz. Between 1913 and 1952 she collected stone carvings for the garden (partly from the old town of Gernsbach) and wrought-iron art objects from the 15th to 19th centuries. The garden, which was intended for high social occasions and events in the heyday of the debris ship, became a prestige object of the wealthy and influential Katz family.

In the 1960s the garden was opened to the general public. In order to match the zeitgeist, concrete slabs were laid and the original shapes were changed. This and the expansion of the Bleichstrasse inflicted deep wounds on the garden.

These wounds ultimately led to the guests staying away. The garden was aging, the plants were proliferating and the buildings were in disrepair. At this point, the viewer could only guess at the original idyll on the Murg from the glorious times.

Restoration and reopening

The Katz'sche Garten experienced a renaissance between 1995 and 2001. In order to preserve the valuable gardens with their collectibles and buildings for future generations, a voluntary working group was founded in 1995: the Katz'scher Garten working group .

During this time the garden remained closed, but with the help of the working group in cooperation with the city of Gernsbach it was able to be extensively restored and reopened in July 2001.

The historical forms were largely retained during the restoration. The property now belongs to the Pfleiderer company and no longer the Katz family, but Jürgen Illig's working group continues to take care of the plant and other new acquisitions.

Jürgen Illig gave the facility an exotic flair with a number of palm trees and plants imported from Italy, the USA and Asia and is striving for further expansion.
