Kau (Vettelschoss)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kau (mostly "die Kau") is a district of the local community Vettelschoss in the Rhineland-Palatinate district of Neuwied .

geography

The Kau connects to the south of the center of Vettelschoss, to whose closed village it belongs. The perimeter of the district is roughly bounded by the Kauer Ring , which describes a semicircle . In terms of natural space, the Kau can still be attributed to the Rheinwesterwälder volcanic ridge, but is located on its edge area sloping north to the Asbach plateau and includes altitudes between 315 and 335  m above sea level. NHN . To the west of the Kau runs the district road 19, which leads north to the Vettelschosser town center and west to state road 254 ( Notscheid - Kretzhaus ).

history

For the place name Kau or the underlying field names "In der Kau" or "In / Aus der Kauen" an interpretation as "deposit of game " was proposed. One of the first residents known by name was a Metternich family, which can be traced here from 1732 at the latest. In the context of censuses in the first third of the 19th century, the Kau was recorded together with the distant Seiferhof , in 1817 with 25 and 1828 with 37 inhabitants. In 1843, the Kau, designated as a hamlet , comprised four residential and three farm buildings with 19 residents. In the first topographical survey, completed in 1850, a Kauhof was entered in the west of today's district .

The water supply of the Kau was for a long time denied by two wells located in and near the village , the presence of which in 1900 led to the rejection of a separate water pipe for the district. At the beginning of the 20th century, especially between 1910 and 1935, the prospecting of quartzite in some of the surrounding pits was of economic importance for the village . The low productivity of the deposits was accompanied by a lack of profitability from mining, which in some cases led to the insolvency of the companies affected.

In the post-war period, with the construction of numerous new single-family houses, the village expanded to the east as far as the former Linz – Flammersfeld railway line (closed in 1966).
