history

Presumably the origins of today's district are in a courtyard , which in 1415 in an interest register Rorich III. von Rennenberg was mentioned and was in today's Oberwillscheid. In 1471 Wilhelm von Nesselrode donated half the farm “Willenschit sambt accessories” to Mandt von Seelbach. In 1477 his son Bertram bought the "Güter zu Willscheid" for the chapel in Ehrenstein . An inventory in the area of the Electoral Cologne Office Altenwied in 1660 counted three houses in Willscheid.

From 1802 on, the farm went to the widow Stockhausen for twelve years, who leased it from the Prior von Ehrenstein. Even when the farm came under the control of the House of Nassau-Usingen in 1803 and passed to the Prince of Wied in 1811, the widow remained the tenant. Anton, the son of the widow Stockhausen, continued his mother's lease for another twelve years. Because he died before the lease expired in 1823, his wife Elisabeth Stockhausen took over the farm. When the term of the contract had expired and Elisabeth Stockhausen no longer extended it, the properties were divided up among 23 potential tenants in 1831.

The building and yard was bought by the magistrate Matthias Schmitz from Vettelschoss, after whose death the yard was demolished in 1853. In 1659 there were only two houses in Willscheid apart from the farm. By 1817 the population had grown to 50 and remained relatively constant until the end of the century. According to the Neustadt church registers , the population has fluctuated between 30 and 50 inhabitants since 1660, and in 1987 Willscheid had 20 inhabitants.

Attractions

The Bernardus Chapel from 1683 is likely to replace an older chapel, as a chapel for the place was mentioned in a document from 1570. Its construction probably went back to the Heisterbach monks , as it is consecrated to one of the most important monks of the Cistercian order and is also located on the way between the former Heisterbach Abbey (built in 1192) and the St. Katharinen monastery (built around 1200). It is the only half-timbered chapel within the Linz am Rhein community .
