Kazunori Sugiyama
Kazunori Sugiyama ( Japanese 杉山 和 紀 , Sugiyama Kazunori ; born August 18, 1950 in Tokyo Prefecture ) is a Japanese sound engineer and music producer living in the United States .
Sugiyama studied at Waseda University in Tokyo, where he also completed his postgraduate studies. He then earned his master's degree from Boston University in 1977 . As an autodidact , he began to work as a sound engineer in Japan and then in the United States in the late 1970s. From 1990 to 1993 he was the representative of the Japanese record label Toshiba / EMI in New York City; from 1991 he was the producer of the jazz label DIW Records and Avant Records . With John Zorn he created the avant-garde label Tzadik , for which he productions such as 1930 by Merzbow responsible. Since then he has worked as a producer a. a. with Gil Evans , Ralph Peterson , Toshinori Kondō , Sirone , Billy Bang , Takehisa Kosugi , David Murray ( Fast Life , 1993), the Music Revelation Ensemble , John Zorn ( Masada: Alef , 1994), Andrew Cyrille , Gil Goldstein , George Adams , Gonzalo Rubalcaba , James Blood Ulmer , Geri Allen , Wadada Leo Smith , Zeena Parkins , Marc Ribot and David S. Ware . He also wrote a Miles Davis biography and was a writer and editor on the New Grove Dictionary of Jazz in 1997 . In 1989, the Gil Evans album Bud and Bird , which he produced, received the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance , Big Band ; in Japan he was awarded an album of the year in 1990 and 1992.
