Kean is a German silent film drama from 1921. Heinrich George plays the title role, directed by Rudolf Biebrach .

action

England, early 19th century. The theater actor Edmund Kean , adored by his fans and critics, has once again put on a brilliant performance. He is cheered and the young Anna Danby hangs completely on his every word. But great theatrical art is only one of two passions of the egocentric mime who loves to "bathe" in the homage of his followers. What hardly anyone knows: Kean has a liaison with a married woman, and this Countess Helena Coefeld is quite possessive and jealous. She dislikes the fact that Kean is quite comfortable being adored by Miss Danby, who, according to the will of her mighty uncle Lord Melville, should soon be married appropriately. For Kean, who is also plagued by great financial worries, the “young thing” is little more than a little flirtation.

While Anna now rebels against the family's will to finally marry and prefers to turn to the theater instead of her future groom, it is Kean who helps her to conquer the stage as her world. Incidentally, he convicts Anna's future wife of forging letters and an attempted kidnapping. Soon Kean had problems from several sides: his Countess Helena began to cause trouble because of Anna Danby and, on the other hand, was courted by the heir to the throne, the mighty Prince of Wales. With that, the king's son and Kean get in each other's way amorous massively. When Kean has to find out in a charity performance how the Prince of Wales is courting his beloved, he goes crazy, nervously extremely tense, emotionally and verbally attacks the heir to the throne in a fit of jealousy. This scandal and the allegation that he stole a valuable fan mean that the actor star almost goes to jail. As an alternative, Kean chooses exile abroad. Anna, however, who owes him so much on her way and brings him her love and love for (theatrical) art, becomes a salvation for Kean, and from now on he connects his life with yours.

Production notes

Kean was shot in the Maxim Film Atelier in Berlin's Blücherstraße 32. The five-stroke with a length of 1637 meters passed the film censorship on December 15, 1921 and was banned from youth. The premiere took place the next day in the Tauentzienpalast .

Heinrich George played his first leading role in a film here. Hans Sohnle designed the film structures together with Ludwig Kainer , who also created the costumes.

The adaptation of a model by Alexandre Dumas has little to do with the life of the real Edmond Kean.

criticism

Paimann's film lists summed up: “The who, which has already been filmed once… is a subject that is not easy to deal with, which the director [has] done justice as far as possible. The performance of the well-chosen ensemble deserves a special mention, as do the presentation and photography. "
