No Post for the Colonel (original title: El Coronel no tiene quien le escriba ; international title: No One Writes to the Colonel ) is a Mexican - French - Spanish film drama from 1999. Arturo Ripstein directed the film and his wife Paz wrote the screenplay Alicia Garciadiego based on the novella The Colonel has nobody to write to him by Gabriel García Márquez from 1961.
action
A former colonel who took part in the Thousand Days' War lives with his sick wife in a small town. The family suffers from financial difficulties. The colonel is waiting for the pension he was awarded 15 years ago. Once a week he goes to the port and asks if mail has arrived for him. Just like his wife, he realizes that he will no longer receive a pension notice. Nevertheless, the weekly port visits are maintained.
Reviews
Film-Dienst wrote that the film “ grapples with the Latin American life misery ” and addresses “ the inevitability of fate ”. The “ sepia tint of the pictures ” expresses “ a subtle melancholy that has long crept into life beyond hope and determines all feelings ”.
Awards
The film was nominated for the Palme d'Or in 1999. Paz Alicia Garciadiego was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay for the Goya in 2000. Arturo Ripstein won the Sundance Film Festival's Latin America Cinema Award in 2000 .

After the world premiere on June 2, 1999 in France, the film was shown on September 15, 1999 at the Toronto International Film Festival and in January 2000 at the Sundance Film Festival .
