Keith Johnson (diplomat)

Keith Johnson O.J. (Born July 29, 1921 in Spanish Town , † October 1, 2009 in New York City ) was a Jamaican diplomat .

Life

Keith Johnson was the son of Emily and Septimus Johnston. He attended the Central Branch School in Kingston, Kingston College and studied at Columbia University in New York City .

Keith Johnson joined the British Colonial Administration as a statistical clerk in 1941.

From 1949 to 1962 he worked at the UN headquarters in the Department of Economic and Social Affairs as a research assistant, civil servant and finally in a managerial position. From 1962 to September 12, 1967 he was Consul General in New York City. From September 12, 1967 to 1973, he was the permanent representative of the Jamaican government at the UN headquarters in New York City. From 1965 to 1969 he was accredited as a non-resident ambassador to the Arturo Umberto Illia and Juan Carlos Onganía governments in Buenos Aires .

From February 14, 1973 to February 5, 1981 he was ambassador in Bonn and at the same time he was accredited to the Holy See to the governments in Tel Aviv , Luxembourg and The Hague .

On February 5, 1981, he was appointed ambassador to Washington , where he was accredited from February 24, 1981 to June 11, 1991 and at the same time was the permanent representative of the Jamaican government to the Organization of American States .
