Kenneth A. Farley (* 1964 in Los Angeles ) is an American geochemist at the California Institute of Technology (CalTech).

Farley earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Yale University in 1986 and a Ph.D. from Scripps Institution of Oceanography in 1991. in geosciences . He worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Rochester and the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory . Since 1993 he had a first professorship (assistant professor) at the California Institute of Technology , in 1996 he became an associate professor . In 1998 Farley was given a full professorship, and since 2004 he has held the Chair of Geology and Planetary Science at CalTech.

Farley is an expert in the field of isotope geochemistry , which he uses to determine the origin of the earth's atmosphere , to study cosmic dust falling on the earth or the growth rate of mountains . He uses noble gases , especially isotopes of helium, as a chronometer for processes on earth and outside of it (see radiometric dating ). In his laboratory, uranium-thorium dating as (U-Th) / He dating was essentially developed and calibrated.

In 1999 Farley received the James B. Macelwane Medal from the American Geophysical Union , in 2000 the William O. Baker Award for Initiatives in Research from the National Academy of Sciences, and in 2008 the Arthur L. Day Medal from the Geological Society of America . In 2013 he was elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences and in 2014 a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
