Khalil Shaheed
Khalil Shaheed , also Tom Hall (actually Thomas Howard Hall , born January 19, 1949 , † March 27, 2012 in Oakland ), was an American trumpeter in the field of blues , fusion and jazz as well as music teacher .

Shaheed grew up in Pittsburgh and Chicago , where he frequented jazz clubs on the South Side as a teenager. After studying for two years at Southern Illinois University Carbondale , he began working as a professional musician in San Francisco , where he lived with his mother. He then went on tour in Buddy Miles' band for seven years before working full-time as a music teacher in Oakland. He initially taught at the Dimond Rec Center and the Malonga Casquelord before founding the Oaktown Jazz Workshop (OJW) music education program in 1994 , which was run as Jazz in the Schools at elementary, middle and high schools in Oakland and Fremont in 1998 . Another program of the OJW called Jazz Encounters organized concerts in the Yoshi’s jazz club with artists such as Branford Marsalis , Arturo Sandoval or Joe Zawinul .
As a musician, Shaheed was primarily active in the Oakland jazz scene; he played in the course of his career a. a. with Buddy Miles , Jimi Hendrix (as Tom Hall ), Woody Shaw , John Handy , Billy Higgins, and Taj Mahal ; In total, he participated in 30 recording sessions, including with his own formations as well as with Ledisi Young and Babatunde Lea . Shaheed album with the Big Belly Blues Band was founded in 2002 in the category New Blues artists for the Grammy nominated. Musicians such as Bobby Hutcherson , John Handy, George Cables , Eddie Gale , John Santos and Winard Harper took part in a 2010 charity event at Yoshi's Oakland for the lung cancer musician . Shaheed worked in the bands Big Belly Blues, Mo 'Rockin' Project, Open Mind Ensemble and Redwood Brass until shortly before his death in March 2012 .
