Khouribga ( Arabic خريبكة, Central Atlas Tamazight ⵅⵯⵔⵉⴱⴳⴰ Xʷribga ) is a large Moroccan city with about 200,000 inhabitants in the province of Khouribga in the Béni Mellal-Khénifra region .
location
Khouribga is located in the north of the fertile Tadla plain at an altitude of about 800 m above sea level. d. M. The distance to Casablanca is about 120 km (driving distance) in a north-westerly direction; Marrakech is about 200 km southwest.

economy
In the surrounding villages, agriculture is practiced on a large scale; Animal husbandry (sheep, goats, chickens), on the other hand, has become rather rare. The city itself functions as a regional craft, trade and service center and offers the training facilities and health centers that are important for the region. Phosphate earth has been mined in the area and concentrated into fertilizers since the 1960s ; Around 95% of the world's coveted fertilizer is usually transported by train to the port of Jorf-Lasfar and loaded onto ships there.
history
As is common in the Berber regions of the Maghreb , there are no written records of the earlier history of the place . At the beginning of the French protectorate (1912) Khouribga was only a village with about 1000 inhabitants; The place gained its current importance under the French and especially after the independence of Morocco (1956). The small-scale phosphate mining that began in the 1920s has made a major contribution to the development of the city. The producer is the Moroccan-owned Office Chérifien des Phosphates (OCP) based in Casablanca.
