Khouribga ( Arabic خريبكة, Central Atlas Tamazight ⵅⵯⵔⵉⴱⴳⴰ Xʷribga ) is a large Moroccan city ​​with about 200,000 inhabitants in the province of Khouribga in the Béni Mellal-Khénifra region .

location

Khouribga is located in the north of the fertile Tadla plain at an altitude of about 800 m above sea level. d. M. The distance to Casablanca is about 120 km (driving distance) in a north-westerly direction; Marrakech is about 200 km southwest.

economy

history

As is common in the Berber regions of the Maghreb , there are no written records of the earlier history of the place . At the beginning of the French protectorate (1912) Khouribga was only a village with about 1000 inhabitants; The place gained its current importance under the French and especially after the independence of Morocco (1956). The small-scale phosphate mining that began in the 1920s has made a major contribution to the development of the city. The producer is the Moroccan-owned Office Chérifien des Phosphates (OCP) based in Casablanca.
