Kilosa is a district of the Morogoro region with the administrative center in the city of Kilosa . The district is bordered to the north by the Manyara region , the Gairo district and the Tanga region , to the east by the Mvomero and Morogoro districts , to the south by the Kilombero and Iringa regions, and to the west by the Dodoma and Gairo districts.

The district has an area of ​​11,774 square kilometers and 438,175 inhabitants (as of 2012). Most of the country lies on a plateau, about 400 meters above sea level. It is bounded to the west by the Udzungwa Mountains and to the east by the Uluguru Mountains. The area is drained to the northeast by the Mkata River , which flows into the Wami . The climate is tropical, Aw according to the effective climate classification . There is a dry season that lasts from late May to October, and from November to April it rains 80 to 200 millimeters a month. The warmest month is December with an average temperature of 26.9 degrees Celsius, in July this temperature is 21.8 degrees.

In 1962, when the Morogoro region was established, the Kilosa district was already part of the region, along with the Morogoro and Ulanga districts.

Wasagara and Wakaguru mainly live in Kilosa. Of the people aged five and over, 61 percent spoke Swahili, eight percent English and Swahili, and 31 percent were illiterate (as of 2012).

Facilities and services

  • Education: There are 100 elementary schools, 43 high schools, and five colleges in the district.
  • Health: There are three hospitals, six health centers and 56 pharmacies available for the medical care of the population (as of 2018).

Economy and Infrastructure

Over 70 percent of the households in Kilosa cooked on wood fires, a quarter on charcoal. 63 percent owned a radio, 60 percent a mobile phone, half had a bicycle and one percent owned a car (as of 2012).

  • Agriculture: Around eighty percent of households make a living from agriculture, half of them also keep livestock. The most important domestic animals are chickens, but goats and cattle are also kept in larger numbers and fewer sheep.
  • Industry: The Kilombero sugar factory with 800 employees and 2500 seasonal workers produces more than 300,000 tons of sugar a year, making it one of the four largest sugar factories in Tanzania.
  • Railway: The Tanganyika Railway from Dar es Salaam to Dodoma has a station in Kilosa, here a branch line branches off to the south.
  • Road: The T1 national road from Dar es Salaam to Zambia runs through the southern part of the district through Mikumi .

Attractions

  • Mikumi National Park : This national park, which covers a total of 3230 square kilometers, is located in the south of the country in the border area with the Morogoro and Mvomero districts. In addition to the well-known animals of the African parks such as lions, giraffes, zebras, impalas, buffalo and leopards, the park offers eland antelopes, over 300 different species of birds and baobab trees.
  • Udzungwa Mountains National Park : The altogether 1900 square kilometer, heavily forested area lies in the Udzungwa Mountains in the border area to the Iringa region. Ten species of primates live here, as well as buffalo, leopard, hippopotamus, elephant and crocodile.
