Ulanga is a district of the Morogoro region with the administrative center in Mahenge . The district is bordered by the Kilombero district to the north, the Lindi region to the east, the Ruvuma region to the south and the Malinyi district to the west .

geography

The district has a size of 10,689 square kilometers and 151,001 inhabitants (as of 2012). The country lies between the Mafinji River in the west, the Kilombero in the north, and the Luwegu and Mbarangandu in the southeast. The valley of the Kilombero, which forms the north-western border, is a wide swamp area. To the south is a mountainous plateau with heights of up to 1500 meters above sea level. The valleys of the Luwegu and Mbarangandu are cut into it. The area between the rivers is the portion of the Selous Game Reserve. The climate is mostly warm and temperate, according to the effective climate classification . There are two rainy seasons. Short rain showers fall from November to January, long rains from March to May. It rains a total of 800 to 1,600 millimeters a year. Average daily temperatures range from 18 degrees Celsius in July to 25 degrees Celsius in November.

When the Morogoro region was established in 1962 after Tanganyika gained independence , Ulanga was one of the three districts in the region. The Malinyi district was split off from Ulanga after 2012.

The largest ethnic group in Ulanga are the Wapogoro. The main religion of the district is Christianity . Mahenge is the Roman Catholic bishopric. The diocese covers an area of ​​25,000 square kilometers and has 300,000 inhabitants, of which more than 200,000 are Catholic.

Facilities and services

  • Education: In Ulanga, 26,166 students attend one of 59 public primary schools, where they are taught by 734 teachers. That means forty students for one teacher. Of the 22 secondary schools, 18 are state-run. 396 teachers teach 5098 students in these (as of 2016).
  • Health: The district has a state hospital, two health centers and 22 pharmacies. The Mahenge Hospital is a member of the global (international) neurology / neuroinfectiology working group with the Munich Tropical Institute, the Technical University of Munich , the University of British Columbia in Vancouver and the University of Innsbruck .
  • Water: The main springs are in the Nawenge and Ruaha Mountains. Overall, three quarters of the population have access to safe and clean water (as of 2019).

Economy and Infrastructure

Half of the total area is in the Selous Game Reserve, five percent in forest reserves and eight percent in open forest. Almost a third is used for agriculture.

  • Agriculture: Around 90 percent of the population live from agriculture. This is mainly operated by small farmers and without irrigation. The main crops are rice and corn. Climate change and fires are causing severe deforestation, leading to soil erosion and a decline in crops.
  • Roads: The district has mostly unpaved roads. The connection from Mahenge to Ifakara in the north, the national road T16, is not paved either.

Attractions

  • Selous Game Reserve: In the southeast, the district has a share of the 50,000 square kilometer Selous Game Reserve. This was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982 because of its natural state, its large number of elephants, black rhinos, cheetahs, giraffes, hippos and crocodiles and because of the diversity of habitats .

Others

The Mühlviertel parish of Katsdorf has maintained a partnership with the parish of Igota, which is 40 kilometers north of the district capital Mahenge, since 2010.
