Kimmeridge is a small bay village on the Isle of Purbeck in the county of Dorset on the south coast of England .
location
Kimmeridge is about 6 kilometers south of Wareham , about 4 kilometers southwest of Corfe Castle and 8 kilometers directly west of Swanage . It is about 20 km southwest of the major cities of Poole and Bournemouth .
A stretch of coastline stretches from Orcombe Point near Exmouth in the west to the Isle of Purbeck in the east and was the first natural landscape in England to be declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Kimmeridge and Kimmerid Bay are part of the Jurassic Coast , one of the natural wonders of the world and known for its fossils . Hen Cliff is a slate rock face at the eastern end of Kimmeridge Bay, which is home to numerous fossils.

The term Kimmeridgium was introduced by Jules Thurmann in 1832. It is the Latinized name of the village of Kimmeridge. The Kimmeridgium is a level of the Upper Jurassic (Malm). It is bounded at the bottom by the oxfordium and at the top by the tithonium .
