King's Quest IV: The Perils of Rosella was the first graphic adventure - computer game with a female protagonist. The player takes on the role of Princess Rosella, daughter of King Graham of Daventry ( King's Quest I and King's Quest II ) and the twin sister of Gwydion / Alexander ( King's Quest III ). King's Quest IV was also the first PC game to support a sound card .

This game was the only one in the episode in which the action takes place during a certain and limited period of time. The events last approximately 24 hours. Some activities need to be completed during the day, while other puzzles can only be solved at night.

King Graham has had a heart attack and is on the verge of death. The good fairy Genesta notifies Rosella through the magic mirror and offers her help. Genesta teleports Rosella to Tamir's land, where she learns about a magical fruit that can heal her father. But Genesta herself will soon die if a magical talisman stolen from her evil sister Lolotte is not returned to her. Rosella must win Lolotte's trust by performing three tasks for her. She then has to defeat the evil fairy to find the talisman and return home to Daventry. Fortunately, Lolotte's son Edgar has fallen in love with Rosella and will support her.

It is possible to complete King's Quest IV without retrieving the magical fruit. But this path leads to a tragic end.

King's Quest IV was the first commercial entertainment product to support optional sound cards and synthesizers such as AdLib and Roland MT-32 . This allowed the team to include realistic sound effects as well as an orchestral soundtrack in the game. Things that were previously impossible with the usual one-channel system loudspeaker . The game contains over 75 pieces of music by William Goldstein, a composer known in Hollywood (e.g. for the TV series Fame from 1982).

Versions

King's Quest IV was simultaneously in the AGI - and SCI - Engine produced and released. The AGI engine has been in all earlier issued Sierra - Adventures used the SCI engine later in all. The main advantages of SCI are a higher video resolution (320 × 200 instead of 160 × 200), sound card support , mouse support and a more versatile scripting system.

The AGI version was developed because Sierra assumed that the low-end systems of the time would not be able to run the SCI version and would require a scaled-down version of the game. However, following the sales figures, the AGI version was discontinued shortly after the release . Today it is a collector's item - a rarity .

The gameplay of the two versions is identical, except that the SCI version includes an advanced parser . In addition, the famous Easter Egg "beam me" (which Rosella transports to a secret room with the development team behind it) is only included in AGI version 2.0.
