action

The film opens in Staten Island in 1993, where a group of masked men rob the home of a Russian family, the Petrovs. While they are stowing the money in sports bags, they are seen by Ms. Petrov and shoot them, after which the gangsters flee.

Two years later, the New York police officer Andy Burnett is transferred to Miami to investigate undercover against the club owner Chris Troiano, who is suspected of laundering drug money. In Miami, Burnett gets a job as a bouncer at one of Troiano's clubs. He gets to know the lifestyle of South Beach and increases in the reputation of Troiano. Finally he takes him on the yacht of the drug lord Allie Boy. Thus Troiano's connection to the drugs can be proven. Finally Burnett gives up his cover and interrogates Troiano. He agreed to a deal and testified against many drug criminals like Allie Boy in order to avoid life imprisonment.

Reviews

“The facts are largely authentic. Nevertheless, screenwriter Nicholas Pileggi does not manage to create tension and atmosphere as in his models for "GoodFellas" and "Casino". So this TV production just looks like a cheap mix of "Miami Vice" and "Scarface", only ex-pop star Donnie Wahlberg ("New Kids on the Block") comes across as passable "

relation to reality

The film is loosely based on the biography of the American gangster and club owner Chris Paciello . He too had problems with the New York Mafia and therefore fled to Miami. There he quickly became rich and powerful. He was friends with many celebrities, including Madonna . As in the film, his club was also called Liquid . Just like Troiano, Paciello was also convicted by an undercover investigator and he, too, helped convict many criminals with his statements. The film also shows the murder of Gianni Versace by Andrew Phillip Cunanan . Versace was an integral part of life in South Beach and also plays an important role in the film.
