The Altoschatz Church , also called Altoschatz Village Church, is a village church of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Saxony , whose history goes back to the 14th century. Originally it was dedicated to St. Pancras .

location

The church is in the Altoschatz district of the city of Oschatz in Saxony .

history

Already before 1330, when a parish church is mentioned for the first time at this point , there was a Romanesque chapel in Altoschatz , which has been rebuilt and expanded again and again over the centuries. In the 17th century, the nave was considerably lengthened in the width of the choir. The roof turret was attached by an Oschatz carpenter in 1810 and has since been overhauled several times. In 1980 the church was to be given up because the structural condition no longer allowed it to be used. Thanks to voluntary work by Protestant and Catholic Christians, but also by residents who had no church affiliation, the historic building was able to be reconstructed.

Building description

In terms of style, the church shows itself today as a village baroque church. It consists of three components: an eastern rotunda, a choir closed on three sides and a western extension of the same width, the side walls of which protrude a little over the western facade.

The oldest part in terms of architectural history is the choir, the windows of which still have Gothic, sloping reveals and window pillars with simple grooves, the tracery , however, has disappeared. It is believed that the intention was to vault the choir, as indicated by the foundations on the four east corners and the approaches to buttresses .

The peculiar eastern rotunda used as a sacristy is a younger construction phase than the choir . Similar buildings can be found in Groitzsch and Knautnaundorf .

The shape of the south portal, which is concealed by an extension, indicates that it was built in the first quarter of the 16th century. The border of the later western building towards the choir can be recognized by the different shapes of the main cornice .

Furnishing

The altar , a Christmas altar from a Grossenhain workshop from 1525, was originally a winged altar that was converted into a pulpit altar in the course of the Reformation . Next to it is the monument of Johannes von Grauschwitz on the north wall of the church. It was created in 1778 and shows characteristics of the Semper Nicolai School .

Peal

The bell consists of two bronze bells , the bell cage and the bell yokes are made of oak and were renewed in 2013. Below is a data overview of the bell:
