The parish belongs to the deanery of Esch-sur-Alzette and to the Archdiocese of Luxembourg (lux .: Äerzbistum Lëtzebuerg), which includes the entire Grand Duchy of Luxembourg .

history

In 1466 the oldest known chapel in Differdange is mentioned in a document. This was destroyed by acts of war around 1500. Several chapels were mentioned between 1552 and 1772 . In 1803 Differdange became its own parish for the first time, but for financial reasons this parish was dissolved again in 1805 and Differdingen was again part of the Oberkorn parish (see also: Oberkorn Church ).

The direct forerunner of the church in Differdange was a small, dilapidated chapel that replaced the girls' housekeeping school on Bergstrasse. At the instigation of the pastor, Johann Pfeiffer († 1866 to Cholera ), the de Cressac de Soleuvre family donated a garden opposite their castle to build a parish church, a school, a parsonage and the churchyard.

From 1860 to 1862 the parish church was built for around 70,000 francs . In 1861 the parish of Differdange was detached from the parish of Oberkorn and became an independent parish. In 1864 the rectory was completed. The first pastor was Johann Pfeiffer, who moved here from the Oberkorn parish.

Due to the strong population growth at the beginning of the 20th century, the previous Differdingen church became too small and an expansion of the church was considered and requested (1908, 1910, 1912). In 1928 the parish decided to enlarge the parish church , but this did not happen due to various circumstances. In 1932, the local council only promised to renovate the building and postponed enlargement for an indefinite period of time. On November 8, 1932, a building association was founded for the construction of a new church in Fousbann (see: Saint-Joseph (Differdingen) , built in 1933/34) and the expansion of the previous Differdingen parish church. In 1912 the cemetery was abandoned.

In 1947 the church was restored, but it was demolished in 1954. A new one ( Notre-Dame des Douleurs ) was built next to the old church .

Notre-Dame des Douleurs church

The Notre-Dame des Douleurs church was a modern church built in 1954 according to plans by the architect René Fournelle and inaugurated on December 18, 1955 by Bishop Léon Lommel . On the floor of the choir was a mosaic that was bought in 1955 by Pastor Pierre Roos and many believers from Differdange for around one million francs. It showed scenes from the life of Jesus and the Virgin Mary and was designed by Jean Barillet .

The organ came from the organ building company Georg Haupt from Lintgen , the windows and the depictions of the Stations of the Cross by Gustave Zanter . In the church there was also the so-called papal altar (lux .: Poopstaltor ), which was used by Pope John Paul II on May 15, 1985 at the mass in front of Gate II of Esch-Belval . The altar was specially made for this one purpose at ARBED - Belval . The altar was then brought to Differdange church by Pastor Émile Post a short time later.

In 2010, access to the church had to be closed due to the risk of collapse. On the 1st of Advent, December 2nd, 2012, the church was desecrated by Archbishop Jean-Claude Hollerich as part of a liturgical celebration .

Demolition work began on December 10, 2012 due to the existing structural damage.

The Saint-Joseph church in the Fousbann district of Differdange, completed in 1934, still exists.
