Church of St. Sava (Zavidovići)

The Church of St. Sava ( Serbian : Црква Светог Саве, Crkva Svetog Save) is a Serbian Orthodox church in the town of Zavidovići , a town and municipality in the Zenica-Doboj Canton of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the northern center of Bosnia .

The church is located in the northern city center of Zavidovići on Ulica Matije Gubca . The city's Serbian Orthodox cemetery is right next to the church. Not far from the church is the Roman Catholic Church of St. Joseph .

history

The church from 1909 built and 1911 and on March 11 of that year solemnly from the Metropolitan of the Metropolitanate Dabrobosnien Evgenije (Letica) inaugurated. After major damage in the Second World War , it was renovated and given new liturgical furnishings.

Initially, the towns of Zavidovići and Žepče and the surrounding villages formed the common parish of Zavidovići-Žepče , until they were divided in 1976 and the two independent parishes Zavidovići and Žepče were formed. After the Bosnian War they became part of the parish of Zavidovići, the villages of Vozuća and Hrge , and the town of Žepče.

Despite the restoration, the church was in poor condition when the Bosnian War broke out in 1992, so that it was completely restored in 1999.

There is a valuable icon of the Mother of God in the church. In February 2018, students from the city visited the Sunni city mosque, the Serbian Orthodox Church of St. Sava, the Roman Catholic Church of St. Joseph and the city's old Jewish cemetery as part of the Open House peace project .

Few Orthodox believers live in the city today. On January 27, 2020, the faithful celebrated their Slava (patronage festival ) of St. Sava with their parish priest Archpriest Zoran Živković and the priest of the parish Zenica Marko Maleš , and nine-year-old Teodora Živković was appointed as the church's godmother for 2021.

Zavidovići parish priest

The first parish priest of the Zavidovići parish was Nikola Nikolajević (1911). In 1912 Nikodim Plavšić was parish priest, followed in 1913 by Manojlo Varagić. At the time of the First World War in 1915 the already retired priest Nikola Nikolajević was again parish priest. He was succeeded again in December of the same year by priest Nikodim Plavšić.

After the First World War in 1918, Father Manojlo Varagić returned to Zavidovići as a parish priest and stayed until 1928. From 1928 to 1937, Father Kosta Stefković was responsible for the parish. From 1937 to the Second World War, Gojko Ristić was parish priest. It is no longer known who served in the Church at the time of World War II.

After the war until February 15, 1953, Father Miloš Minić headed the parish. He was followed by Priest Radomir Popović from 1953 to 1987. In 1976, during the tenure of Father Popović, the parish was divided. He was followed by priest Golub Mitrović from 1987 until the outbreak of the Bosnian War in 1992.

During the war years from 1992 to 1995 the parish was headed first by Miroslav Driničić and later by Jadran Danilović, the parish priests of the Zenica parish.

Archpriest Zoran Živković has been parish priest since the restoration of the parish of Zavidovići in 1999. Priest Živković also looks after the now extinct parishes of Vozuća, Žepče and Hrge.

The parish of Zavidovići heard as a daughter church , the Church of St.. Nicholas in the hamlet Čardak the village Gostovići in Opština Zavidovići.

architecture

The single-nave church has a semicircular altar - apse in the east and a steeple in the west. The only entrance to the church is on the west side. It has a (wooden) iconostasis with icons , which is typical for Orthodox churches . Currently the church is not frescoed inside .
