The church of the University Hospital Zurich is located in the University Hospital at Rämistrasse 100 in a connecting wing known as a joint on floor U.

Development and construction history

The Zurich University Hospital is one of the largest hospitals in Switzerland and unites 40 clinics and institutes under one roof. In order to give the pastoral care in this hospital enough space, the government council of the canton of Zurich decided in cooperation with the Reformed and the Catholic regional churches in 1986 to build a hospital church, which as a room of silence and reflection for patients, their relatives and the staff should serve for church services of both denominations and other events that must correspond to the purpose of the room.

The hospital church was funded 55% by the Reformed and Catholic regional churches and 45% by the canton of Zurich and is operated by the two regional churches in agreement with the hospital management. The two regional churches each bear half of the costs for the operation and maintenance of the church and that of pastoral care.

Up until the time the hospital church was built, different rooms had been available for pastoral care and church services, but these had to be relocated again and again due to the lack of space in the hospital. The establishment of the hospital church and its ancillary rooms made it possible for the hospital pastoral care to have its own, centrally located center for the first time in the more than hundred-year history of the university hospital in 1988.

The church of the university hospital is located in a part of the building called a joint of the University Hospital Zurich, which connects the parts of the building designed by the architects Haefeli, Moser, Steiger and Fietz between 1948 and 1951. Between 1986 and 1988, the architects Hertig, Hertig and Schoch also built a pastoral care center with a hospital church when the joint connecting wing was built. In September 1987 the foundation stone was laid for the church. On the weekend from October 28th to 30th, 1988, the new joint buildings including the hospital church were handed over to their intended use. The inauguration of the hospital church took place as part of an ecumenical service.

Building description

Location and appearance

The University Hospital Zurich is located at Rämistrasse 100 in the middle of the city of Zurich , opposite the ETH and the university . Between Bettenhaus East , Bettenhaus West and recording tract of as is joint called central connecting wing of the mentioned building. The size of the 8-storey wing is barely visible from the outside, as it has been sunk into the subsoil of the area and the roof has been greened. The church of the university hospital is located on floor U next to the cafeteria and, in addition to the actual church interior, has ancillary rooms that serve as a sacristy and as a meeting room for pastoral care.

Interior and artistic equipment

The hospital church is a round building and can accommodate 150 people. The Zurich artist Max Rüedi created the artistic equipment: the cross and tabernacle as enamel work and two glass windows are from his hand. The wooden altar and ambo were designed by the organ builder Thomas Itten ( Sulz / Laufenburg ) and their design reflects the shape of the organ case.

window

In the left glass window there is a four seasons tree, which shows the cyclical nature of growth and decay in the symbol of the tree. Seen from left to right, the tree produces leaves, flowers and fruits in the four seasons and then loses them again. It is firmly rooted in the ground and from here receives its life force.

The right stained glass window shows two Christian motifs: redemption and liberation. Fish and water are symbols of existential hardship, constriction and dying. Redemption is represented by a bird and a dark, mysterious sun.

The colors of the two windows are recorded in the enamel of the tabernacle and the cross. The dark sun finds its counterpart in the middle of the cross, which appears transparent and bright, but does not leave out the mystery of the cross.

organ

The organ in the church of the university hospital was built by Thomas Itten Orgelbau, Sulz / Laufenburg, in 1988. The console with two manuals and a pedal is built into the organ front. The manual keyboards and the pedal keyboard have lower keys made of light boxwood and upper keys made of black grenadilla . The couplings are switched on by means of the foot pedal. The wind chests are made of oak. The work of the first manual is arranged on two drawers to the side of the console, that of the second manual as a swellable chest with a drawer above the console. The pedal box is in the lower case, the 16 'pipes are behind the organ. The floor plan of the housing takes up the shape of the hospital church as a quarter circle segment.
