The Church of Etelhem ( Swedish Etelhems kyrka ) is a country church on the Swedish island of Gotland . It is one of the parish churches of the parish (swed. Församling ) Guard and belongs to the diocese of Visby .

The oldest part of today's church is the sturdy tower from the beginning of the 13th century. The choir and nave were built around 1300 in the Gothic style and replaced the respective ones in the Romanesque style. The sacristy was added in the 17th century. On the inner walls in the east, south and west of the nave, lime paintings from the 14th century have been preserved, while on the north side the passion master left a passion frieze. In addition, the medieval stained glass has been preserved in some of the windows.

inventory

The baptismal font that describes the sufferings of Christ and Samson comes from the Romanesque church and is attributed to the stone master Hegvald . The triumphal cross from the 14th century hangs in its original place in the triumphal arch . The sandstone altarpiece was made in Burgsvik in 1690 and the sermon chair from 1648 probably in Visby.

The name Etelhem is first mentioned as Eytelem in a copy from the 14th century. The first part contains the Gotland dialect word ajtel and either refers to the limestone present in the Etelhem area or is a nickname for the residents of the area. The second part of the word means courtyard or living space.
