The Klinte Church is a Gothic country church on the Swedish island of Gotland . It belongs to the parish (Swedish församling ) Klinte in the diocese of Visby .

location

The church is located on road 141 from Klintehamn to Hemse , 29 km south of Visby , 18 km northwest of Hemse and 2 km east of Klintehamn near the west coast of the island.

Church building

The church was built of stone in the Middle Ages and consists of a single nave nave . In the eastern part there is a narrow, just closed choir with a sacristy on the northern side. On the west side of the nave is the church tower , the lower part of which forms the remainder of a Romanesque church that was built in the first half of the 13th century. Today's nave with the choir and sacristy was built around 1300 and the tower was raised at the same time. The high tower has brick side gables and sound openings on three floors. It is crowned by an octagonal spire. Of particular interest on the outside is the pointed arched perspective portal of the choir, which is richly decorated, among other things, with carved capital ribbons. There are simpler arched portals on the north and south sides of the tower. The interior of the church is covered by high tent vaults, two in the nave and one each in the choir and one in the tower room. The ornamental frescoes of the choir vault were probably created around 1300 when the vault was built. In the east window of the choir there are remains of stained glass from the same period. A large number of scratches can be seen in the plastering of the wall of the tower room. The church was restored in 1933 under the direction of the architect Erik Fant and 1976–1977 under the direction of the architect Leif Olsson .

Furnishing

  • A triumphal cross from the 15th century is the oldest piece of equipment in the church.
  • The altar is made of sandstone and dates from 1643.
  • The font was made in 1667 by Henrik Hansson Schotte.
  • The pulpit and epitaphs are from the 17th century.
  • The organ was built in 1977 by Grönlunds Orgelbyggeri from Gammelstad.
