The Church of Sjonhem ( Swedish Sjonhems kyrka ) is a country church on the Swedish island of Gotland, consecrated in the 12th century . It belongs to the parish (Swedish församling ) Vänge in the Diocese of Visby , until 2005 it belonged to the parish of Sjonhem.

location

The church is located on the road 143 from Roma to Ljugarn in the interior of Gotland, 22 km southeast of Visby , 4.5 km southeast of Roma and 20 km northwest of Ljugarn.

Church building

The brick church consists of a rectangular nave with a narrower, straight choir in the east, a church tower in the west and a sacristy on the north side of the choir. The low tower, which was built at the beginning of the 13th century, comes from an older Romanesque church from the second half of the 12th century. During the 1936 restoration, the remains of the foundations of the nave of the church were found, which were about eight meters long and five meters wide. Remnants of the foundation of a choir were not found. Today's nave and choir were built in the middle of the 13th century. The sacristy was followed much later in 1818. The nave and choir are lower by gabled roofs covered. The tower has narrow sound openings provided with columns and is crowned by an octagonal spire with further sound openings under a canopy. The square windows of the nave were added at a later time, while the arched windows of the choir, which form a group of three in the east, are still original. The three entrances to the church are in the south of the choir and nave and in the west of the tower. They all have round arches as enclosures.

The two tent vaults of the nave are separated by a strong belt arch that rests on consoles . The triumphal arch and the tower arch are both slightly pointed arches. The choir has a tent vault, but the tower space is made up of a low vault, which is partly a tent vault and partly a Romanesque cross vault . During a restoration carried out from 1961 to 1962 by the architects Erik Fant and Olle Karth , the original ornaments of the vault paintings in the nave were brought out again. This was probably painted in connection with the construction of the vaults in the middle of the 13th century. Preserved medieval stained glass can be found on two of the east windows of the choir. The north window shows the birth of Christ , the adoration of Jesus by the kings and the appearance of the twelve-year-old Jesus in the temple of Jerusalem. The southern window shows the resurrection of Lazarus , the entry of Christ into Jerusalem and the transfiguration of the Lord .
