The Church of Vall ( Swedish Valls kyrka ) is a country church on the Swedish island of Gotland . It belongs to the parish (Swedish församling ) Vall, Hogrän och Atlingbo församling in the diocese of Visby .

location

The church is located inland from Gotland on the road 142 from Visby to Hemse , 13.5 km south of Visby, 7 km west of Roma and 32 km north of Hemse.

Church building

The church of Vall was built from limestone in the Middle Ages . It is a church with a west tower and a narrow apse and a sacristy on the north side of the choir . The two-aisled nave and choir were probably built at the beginning of the 13th century. The tower followed in the mid-13th century, but was not completed to its present height until the end of the 13th century. The sacristy probably dates from the same period. An interesting detail is the elongated outer space with a separate entrance in the south wall of the tower. This was probably a prayer chamber for people who were locked out of the church ( leprosy fissure ), but who could follow the mass from here through a small peephole ( hagioscope ).

The exterior is dominated by the stately gallery tower with its pointed gables and the columned sound openings on three levels, which is crowned by a short, octagonal spire. The nave facade is adorned by a round arch frieze. Of the three arched portals of the church, the north portal of the tower is the largest and most elaborate. The windows have been changed and new windows have been added in the 19th century. The nave is covered on the inside by four vaults, cross vaults in the east and so-called shell vaults in the west. They are carried by a central column with a capital adorned with ornaments. A narrow, arched wall opening leads to the choir. A niche in the south wall of the apse is of interest, with runes from around 1300 carved into the doors. In the west window of the tower room there are remains of a glass painting from the beginning of the 14th century. The church was restored in 1955 according to plans by the architect Olle Karth .
