Kirk Degiorgio (* ca. 1967 / 1968 ) is an English musician, record producer, record label owner and DJ. He became known in the techno scene, especially from the beginning of the 1990s, through his publications under the pseudonym As One .

His music incorporates influences from Detroit techno , soul , funk and above all jazz .

Life

Kirk Degiorgio was born in the east London borough of Stepney in the late 1960s . On his mother's side, he is related to the T-Rex singer Marc Bolan . At the age of four his family moved to Ipswich .

After an aunt gave him her collection of soul and funk records in 1979, he became interested in music. From 1982 he dealt with DJing , initially in the field of electro .

In 1986 he moved to the West London borough of Richmond and began studying history there. From the end of the 1980s he increasingly dealt with house and Detroit techno . He produced first demos, one of which was played by Colin Favor on a Kiss FM show. The pieces were licensed by the B12 operators Michael Golding and Steve Rutter and published on B12 under the name Future / Past . Dance Intellect , released as Future / Past , is his first production.

Through contacts with Andy Turner and Ed Handley from The Black Dog as well as the Detroit techno producer Carl Craig , his pieces of music were released, including on the Intergalactic Beats compilation on the Planet E label operated by Craig .

Shortly thereafter, Degiorgio started his own record label Applied Rhythmic Technology (ART). Shortly afterwards, some tracks were licensed and re-released by the influential R&S Records label. Through contact with Grant Wilson-Claridge, Degiorgio became aware of the music of Richard D. James alias Aphex Twin . He suggested a collaboration between ART and James' and Wilson-Claridge's Rephlex Records label . In 1992 the compilation The Philosophy Of Sound And Machine was released with pieces by Degiorgio (Future / Past), James (Q-Chastic; Soit-PP), Kosmik Kommando and other artists.

In 1994 Degiorgio switched to the New Electronica label and released the first As-One album Reflections there .

This was followed by collaborations with Photek and the founding of the Op-ART label , which included works by Photek and Paul W. Teebrooke ( Steve Pickton ).

In 1997 Degiorgio switched to James Lavelle's label Mo 'Wax , on which the album Planetary Folklore was released in the same year . Together with the Brazilian fusion jazz band Azymuth , Degiorgio recorded an album for Far Out Recordings in 2001 under the project name Offworld . After changes at the label, Degiorgio switched to the US label Ubiquity , which initially released the 2003 retrospective compilation So Far (So Good) ... Twelve Years Of Electronic Soul .

From 2004 Degiorgio devoted himself increasingly to work on the soul-pop project The Beauty Room with the singer Jinadu . In the same year the single Holding On was released . The first album The Beauty Room was released in 2006 on Peacefrog Records .

In 2005 the album Elegant Systems was released by Versatile Records. Also in 2005 Degiorgio took part in the Red Bull Music Academy in Seattle . The following year, the album Planetary Folklore 2 + 1 was released by Octave Lab.
