Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me is the 7th studio album by the British alternative rock band The Cure .
Released in 1987, this album marked a major milestone in The Cure's way into the American mainstream. It became their first album to hit the Billboard Top 40 ( Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me went platinum). It was also a great international success - like its predecessor The Head on the Door - and reached the top 10 in many countries.
history
Although it was a double album, Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me was released as a single CD and a single cassette. In order to meet the running time limits of the Red Book (then: 74:33 minutes) and to be able to publish the album on CD, the song Hey You !!! omitted from the first CD release. In all cassettes spending was Hey You !!! however included. A limited vinyl edition with an additional maxi single (orange 12-inch vinyl; the following songs were included: Sugar Girl , Snow In Summer , Icing Sugar , A Japanese Dream , Breathe and A Chain Of Flowers ) was also released.
According to Robert Smith, he wrote the song Shiver and Shake about Lol Tolhurst's diminishing role in the band. Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me is also the last album on which Porl Thompson played keyboards; on all the following albums he only played guitar. Andrew Brennan played the saxophone as the star guest on the tracks Hey You !!! and Icing Sugar.
Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me is still prominently on the concert set lists; the 2008 tour 4Tour included performances of the songs The Kiss , Torture , Catch , Why Can't I Be You? , How Beautiful You Are , Just Like Heaven , Hot Hot Hot !!! , If Only Tonight We Could Sleep , and Shiver and Shake on various appearances.
Re-release in 2006
The album was re-released in August 2006 . The first CD contains Hey You !!! , which had been left out on previous publications due to lack of space. The second CD contains demo recordings and live versions of songs from the first CD; including a recording of Why Cant I Be You? recorded at the last concert of the Kissing Tour at Wembley Stadium . The new edition was released on August 8, 2006 in the United States and on August 14, 2006 in the United Kingdom.
According to Robert Smith, there is so much material that he initially thought of releasing three CDs. In addition to the original album, there would have been a disc with demos of the B-sides and unreleased songs and one with alternative versions of songs from the album. After discussions with family and friends, he decided that the latter of the two extra discs originally envisaged would make more sense for release. But he did not rule out that the first extra CD would appear either as a leak or as part of a further release.
Trivia
- The album was recorded for the most part in ten weeks in the Miraval studios in southern France (located between Marseille and Nice), where Pink Floyd , Stevie Winwood and Yes had already recorded.
- The record cover shows Robert Smith's lipstick-smeared lips in microscopic detail.
- In 1987 Fiction (UK) released an interview record with Robert Smith about Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me
- Bob Clearmountain was supposed to produce the entire record to make the music more acceptable to "American ears"
- A total of 35 tracks were recorded for the album, of which 18 were then selected.
- Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me is also seen as stylistically very diverse by Roberts Smith himself, which he explains by saying that he had expressly asked the band members to be more active in songwriting and, for example, to bring cassettes of their compositions with them.
- Like many other albums, Roberts Smith's Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me was called The Cure's last album. In a Q&A from 2000 - he explains this by telling the band before each album recording that they should treat the album as if it were their last.
live
In April 2014, the Cure announced that later that year they would perform both The Top , The Head on the Door and Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me collectively as part of their 3rd trilogy tour .
reception
- Allmusic: Stephen Thomas Erlewine describes Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me as both more accessible and more ambitious than the previous albums. Even if the album doesn't always work, the best moments ( like Just like Heaven and Why can't I be you ) would make it one of the Cure's best albums.
- Pitchfork gives a review published in 2006 9.4 out of 10. In Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me all the great features of the Cure would come together and would sound better than ever. The critic describes Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me as one of the most convincing, emotionally complete and individualistic albums of the 80s. While many would refer to disintegration when it came to determining which album of the cure to listen to if only one could be heard, Pitchfork recommends Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me for the full range of the cure
- Rolling Stone: In its contemporary review, Rolling Stone describes Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me as standing out even in a year with several ambitious double albums (including Prince's Sign "☮" the Times ). The sense of balance would particularly stand out: saxophones, violins and even entire string sections are used carefully and not without reason.
