Disintegration is the eighth music album by the English rock band The Cure . It was released in May 1989 on the Fiction Records label . It is not clearly assigned to a genre, but the attributions to Dark Wave and Gothic Rock predominate .

background

After the two previous gothic rock albums Faith from 1981 and Pornography from 1982, The Cure released several pop albums. In 1989, however, with disintegration, there was a change from the poppy to a more melancholic mood.

In 2002, The Cure combined the albums Pornography , Disintegration and Bloodflowers, which was released in 2000, into a “ trilogy ” that was played live in full at concerts in Brussels and Berlin. The band thus regards their album Disintegration as one of their most important works.

Music style and lyrics

The tracks on the album are generally described as melancholy. They are often referred to as tightly woven due to the different tonal levels of the many instruments used. Many songs have a particularly long intro. For example, on "Pictures of You" the vocals start after 2:37 minutes and on "Fascination Street" only after 2:20 minutes. Half of the songs are unusually long at over six minutes. All texts were written by Robert Smith .
