Klaus-Dieter Vorlop (* 1951 in Braunschweig ) is a German chemist and university professor .

Life

Vorlop studied until 1978 at the Technical University of Braunschweig chemistry and was there in 1984 on the subject of the polymer fixation of microorganisms and application of biocatalysts for the cleavage of penicillin G and synthesis of L-tryptophan doctorate . In 1991 he completed his habilitation and was awarded the Venia Legendi for technical chemistry . In 1991 he accepted a chair for technical chemistry at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg . In 1993 Vorlop went back to Braunschweig. He took over the management of the Institute for Technology, later the Institute for Agricultural Technology , of the Johann Heinrich von Thünen Institute , a predecessor of the Federal Research Center for Agriculture (FAL). In 2000, after the successful merger, he and Axel Munack headed the FAL Institute for Technology and Biosystem Technology, which has now been dissolved . He has served as FAL Vice President since 2003 and was then elected President of the FAL in 2004/05. In 2017 he retired.

A long-term focus of Vorlop's work is the bioconversion of renewable raw materials . In view of the limited fossil raw material reserves, renewable raw materials are becoming more and more important in terms of sustainable development . The biotechnological manufacturing processes he investigated (with immobilized biocatalysts ) for products (e.g. 1,3-propanediol , itaconic acid ) from renewable raw materials are becoming more and more important as an alternative to petrochemically manufactured products.

His further research are in the field of waste utilization and pollutant elimination (biological removal of ammonia from water and air, catalytic nitrate - and nitrite degradation in water and drinking water).
