Life

Klaus Besser was editor-in-chief of the Neue Ruhr Zeitung (NRZ) published in Essen and, from the end of the 1950s, editor-in-chief of the DGB weekly newspaper Welt der Arbeit . In the 1970s, Besser became one of the most famous gastronomy critics alongside Wolfram Siebeck and Gert von Paczensky . It was these three restaurant critics in particular who made nouvelle cuisine and its German chefs known.

From 1970 the restaurant award Goldene Pfeffermühle was initiated by Klaus Besser and awarded by the Bonn society magazine Esprit , which Besser published. The golden pepper mill was considered the most reputable culinary art award in the republic. Besser presented it to Günther Wanka from Hotel-Restaurant Erbprinz in 1974, to Eckart Witzigmann in 1975 , to Rudolf Katzenberger in 1976 and to Lothar Eiermann in 1977 .

In 1978, Besser founded the magazine Besser's Gourmet Journal - The art of enjoying properly , which was transformed into Ullstein's Gourmet Journal in 1980 . In 1982 it became VIF - the gourmet journal , which was finally included in the magazine Der Feinschmecker in 1997.

From 1979 he published a hit list of the best German restaurants, on which he put the Swiss parlors at number one.

Besser published numerous books in the field of gastronomy. After his death, his wife Ilse Besser published Besser's Best Restaurants, Cologne, Bonn and the surrounding area between 1995 and 1999. From 1996 to 1999 she also awarded the Klaus Besser Medal to special catering establishments in Cologne.
