Klaus Waschk

Klaus Waschk (born June 4, 1941 in Insterburg / Tschernjachowsk , East Prussia ) is a German draftsman and book illustrator . He lives with his wife, the sculptor Doris Waschk-Balz , in Hamburg .

Life

After graduating from high school in Bremen, Klaus Waschk studied art history, archeology and German studies in Marburg in 1961/62 . From 1962 to 1966 he studied free graphics and illustration with Professor Gunter Böhmer at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart, and then from 1966 to 1971, Waschk studied German at the University of Hamburg . After completing his studies, he worked for 18 years as a teacher for the subjects of German, fine arts and education in the Hamburg school service.

After the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences was able to win him over for a lectureship in drawing in 1983, in 1989 he switched entirely to the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW) in Hamburg, which was renamed in 2001 , to accept a professorship in the design department. Until his retirement in 2006, he was involved in various functions (including as dean) of the department.

From 2007 to 2009 Klaus Waschk was founding professor and dean of the design academy berlin , department of communication design. He taught as a lecturer in representation and design methodology.

Artistic creation

Despite his many years of commitment as a teacher and professor, Waschk repeatedly took time for freelance work in art and illustration. Since 1967 his works can be seen in many solo exhibitions and as participations in national and international exhibitions. In addition, numerous books were illustrated by his drawings. For these works, Waschk was honored in 1994 with the Hans Meid Prize for Book Illustration .

His drawings for Johannes Bobrowski's Lithuanian pianos (1991) and the linocut illustrations for Peter Rühmkorf's early poems Irdisches Lust in g (1997) earned him awards for the “Most Beautiful Book of the Year” from the Book Art Foundation .

In recent years, All of the Works of Wandsbecker Boten (2005) by Matthias Claudius and Das Kapital (2007) by Karl Marx have been vividly supplemented with hundreds of drawings by Klaus Waschk.
