Klaus Wiegand

Klaus Wiegand (born August 16, 1941 in Stadtilm ) was major general of the National People's Army (NVA) of the German Democratic Republic .

biography

After graduating from high school , the son of a shoe factory worker began training as a lathe operator in 1958 , which he broke off to join the NVA on April 8, 1959 . After basic training as a gunner in the 4th Panzer Regiment, he was an officer student at the officers' school of the land forces from 1959 to 1961 . Then he was platoon leader in the 4th Panzer Regiment until 1966. In 1962 he became a member of the SED . Between 1966 and 1971 he was an information officer in the staff of the 4th motorized rifle division (4th MSD) in Erfurt , before he graduated from the military academy "MWFrunse" in the USSR from 1971 to 1975 and graduated with a degree in military science.

After his return he was first head of the reconnaissance subdivision and then from 1977 to 1979 head of the operations subdivision of the 4th MSD. This was followed by a position as head of the operations department in the staff of Military District III in Erfurt , where he was an employee of Major General Alfred Krause . Between 1980 and 1982 he was a graduate of the General Staff Academy of the USSR . After his return he was then deputy commander and chief of staff of the 7th Panzer Division in Dresden .

From May 1, 1984 to October 31, 1986 he was the commander of the 11th MSD in Halle and as such was appointed major general on March 1, 1986 on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the NVA . After a year as chief of staff and deputy chief of military district III, he was finally chief of military district III in Leipzig from 1987 to 1990. Immediately before the reunification of Germany , he was released on October 2, 1990.

In the course of his military career he was awarded the battle medal “For services to the people and fatherland” in bronze.
