The Kleine Bornhorster See is a quarry pond in the eastern urban area of Oldenburg (Oldenburg) not far from the border with the Wesermarsch district , which runs only around 500 meters northeast. However, it is already outside the denser urban development of Oldenburg. The lake is located near the small town of Groß Bornhorst and the Etzhorn district of Oldenburg , both to the west of the water. The Hunte flows three kilometers south of him .

description

The water surface of the Kleiner Bornhorster See is 20 hectares and its circumference is around two kilometers. This makes it one of the larger lakes in the city of Oldenburg and the Oldenburg area. It is almost circular in shape and measures almost 500 meters in north-south direction, the east and west banks are up to 600 meters apart. In the north a small peninsula protrudes into the lake and forms a kind of lake corner. The lake is 0 meters above sea level, i.e. at sea level. On the west bank there is a 150 meter long and up to 40 meter wide sandy beach and lots of sunbathing areas. The Kleine Bornhorster See is an official swimming lake that is monitored by the DLRG .

400 meters south of it lies the Großer Bornhorster See, which is more than twice as large . Between the Kleiner Bornhorster See and Groß Bornhorst or Etzhorn, the A 29 motorway runs just under 200 meters from the west bank. The lake owes its creation to the ring of expressways around Oldenburg: The soil that was removed from the lake was needed for the filling of the ramp to the Huntehochbrücke and the dams of the A 293 and the north bypass.

The Kleine Bornhorster See is located in the low-lying marshland in the "Oldenburg-Rasteder Geestrand " conservation area . Great crested grebes and other water birds breed at the Kleiner Bornhorster See . The area is particularly outstanding because of its high density of breeding pairs of the nightingale . The NABU organized a permanent monitoring of breeding and resting birds in the area of the lake.

The area east of the lake consists of (old) marsh-typical permanent grassland, extends over five kilometers to the east and, as Bornhorster Huntewiesen, is largely under nature protection.

In the west, already 150 meters from the lakeshore and then beyond the motorway, the land rises to the Oldenburger Geest , so that both large and small Bornhorst are 12 to 15 meters above sea level. NN lie. To the northwest of the lake, on both sides of the motorway, there are two forest areas totaling 10 hectares.

In contrast to the Großer Bornhorster See, the Kleine Bornhorster See has two (albeit small) islands. The larger island of around 2,000 m² is located on the north bank in a Seewinkel, the tiny island on the south bank is only around 100 m². Both islands have closed trees.
