history

In the vicinity of Kleinkemnat stood the castle of the former medieval manor house Großkemnat, built around 1185 by the Lords of Apfeltrang (Afiltranc). The most important representative of this family was Volkmar II, called the Wise, married to Mechthild von Arbon . He was the city founder of Arbon, city bailiff of Konstanz, founder of the Cistercian convent Oberschönenfeld and educator of the last Staufer king Konradin von Hohenstaufen . Several minstrels were guests at the castle during his time.

The Lords of Ramschwag , a noble family from the canton of St. Gallen, held the castle from 1280 to 1373.

The Swabian family of Benzenau later took up residence at the castle. Simprecht von Benzenau finally sold the rule including jurisdiction to the Kempten monastery . In the course of the secularization of the monasteries, the castle was razed in 1805. A remnant of the keep has been preserved (it is mistakenly referred to as the "Roman Tower") and is a popular destination for the Kaufbeuren. In 1985 Kemnat celebrated the 800th anniversary of the castle.

Kleinkemnat was incorporated into Oberbeuren as part of the regional reform on June 30, 1972 and, together with the latter and the Hirschzell community, incorporated into the independent city of Kaufbeuren one day later.
