The Bonnefontaine monastery (Bonus fons) is a former Cistercian abbey in the municipality of Blanchefosse-et-Bay , canton Rumigny , in the Ardennes department , Grand Est region , in France , around 25 km southeast of Hirson in the Thiérache .

history

The monastery was founded in 1152 by a donation from Mr. von Rumigny Nicolas II, whose grave is in the ruins of the church, and received its Cistercian founding convent from the Signy monastery . So it belonged to the filiation of the Clairvaux Primary Abbey . The monastery operated slate mining in the Rumigny area. Around 1660, the abbey's printing house published several books, including an eight-volume library for the Fathers of Cîteaux by Bertrand Tissier . The monastery fell into ruins during the Hundred Years War , but was rebuilt in 1538 under the Commendatar Abbot Jean de Coucy. During the French Revolution , the monastery was closed in 1791.

Buildings and plant

The monastery church from the 13th century was destroyed in 1792, but is still in ruins ( Monument historique ). Three pointed arcades on the north side of the nave with bundled pillars and leaf capitals have been preserved . The walls of the south aisle and the transept are almost completely upright. The Romanesque portal is surmounted by a round tympanum and a semicircular vault. The transept facade still has a large eight-ray rose window . Various items of furniture, including the “Blanchefosse Cross”, have entered the Blanchefosse church.
