Santa Maria di Ponza Monastery is a former Cistercian abbey in what is now Lazio , Italy . It was on the island of Ponza , one of the Pontine Islands in the Tyrrhenian Sea off the coast of Terracina in what is now the province of Latina .

history

On Ponza, some hermits had settled around the church of Santa Maria, the burial place of Pope Silverius , who is said to have died here in 537 and was venerated as a martyr. Pope Innocent III intended to join the resulting monastery to the Cistercian order, but this connection did not take place until 1245 under the pontificate of Pope Innocent IV. The monastery was subordinate to the Tre Fontane monastery near Rome and so it belonged to the filiation of the Clairvaux primary abbey . The island location led to an isolation of the monastery (cf. Santo Spirito di Zannone monastery on the neighboring island of Zannone ), and pirate attacks also took place. In 1454 the monastery appeared for the last time in the statutes of the general chapter when it moved to the mainland in Formia near Gaeta , where a church was built that was named Santa Maria di Ponza, but which was destroyed by bombs in the Second World War. This monastery soon fell into the hands of the Farnese family , who in 1542, together with Alessandro Farnese, appointed Abbot of the Commendatars , took them to Emphyteuse , from whom they passed to the Bourbons who ruled Naples .

Plant and buildings

Components of the monastery are installed in various private houses on Ponza.
