history

The company was founded in 1987 as Knesebeck & Schuler Verlag by Rosemarie von dem Knesebeck (* 1947) and Wolfgang Schuler, who previously held a managerial position at Max Hueber Verlag . Two years later, the partners separated and the company was renamed Knesebeck Verlag .

In the 1990s, the publishing house specialized in picture and photo books. Knesebeck recorded his first success with Isolde Ohlbaum's “Because all lust wants eternity”. Since then, the publisher has also been known for trading in international photo rights.

In 2000, the French La Martinière Groupe became the majority shareholder in the publisher.

The title “Fit for Cooking” won the 2008 Gourmand World Cookbook Award . In the same year the illustrated book "Equus" received the award in silver as part of the award of the German Photo Book Prize .

The La Martinière Groupe has been the sole owner of the publishing house since 2011. Rosemarie von dem Knesebeck initially continued to manage it together with her husband, Herneid von dem Knesebeck, who had already joined the management team in 1991. At the end of 2011 she handed over management to Antonia Bürger, previously assistant to the management of Bonnier-Holding .
