Markus Mauthe (born June 16, 1969 in Friedrichshafen ) is a German photographer , author , speaker and environmental activist .

Since 2003 he has been working as a speaker in close cooperation with Greenpeace and is the founder of the nature conservation organization AMAP, which operates rainforest protection on the Brazilian cocoa coast.

He has now published around 10 books and presented around 2000 multimedia lectures. The documentary On the Edge of the World with Markus Mauthe was released in 2018 .

Life

Markus Mauthe was born in Friedrichshafen in 1969 and grew up in a family of photographers in Manzell on Lake Constance . He attended Karl-Maybach-Gymnasium, where he completed secondary school and a three-year training as an industrial and advertising photographer.

He visited Africa for the first time at the age of 17 and, at the age of 20, crossed New Zealand by bike.

In 1991/92 he went freelance as a photographer. He photographed travel stories and gave lectures. In 2002 he learned from Greenpeace that 80% of all primeval forests have already disappeared. This was the trigger to dedicate himself to the preservation of our livelihoods in his future work. He gives up to 120 lectures a year.

His residence shifted from Friedrichshafen to Brazil to the Fazenda Almada in the state of Bahia . Together with his wife Juliana de Cerqueira Lima, he runs an organic cocoa farm there and runs a guest house that is over 160 years old and has been preserved in the original colonial style to this day.

Mauthe is married and has two children. He is also the founder of AMAP (Almada Mata Atlântica Project), a non-profit nature conservation organization that is committed to the preservation and expansion of the already highly fragmented Mata Atlântica rainforest .

He has traveled to over 80 countries, some of them several times, and took photos there.

Markus Mauthe is also one of the “hunters of light”. Together with the four nature photographers Ingo Arndt, David Hettich, Bernd Rommel and Florian Schulz, the five “hunters” deal with their pictures and stories on their live shows and their photo book People for Nature.

For his last film, book and multimedia lecture project On the Edge of the World , he spent three years visiting and portraying 22 indigenous peoples in remote regions on 13 trips.

Press and television reports reported on Mauthe u. a. on ARD , SWR , Geo , Welt , Focus , Stern , Frankfurter Rundschau , Hamburger Morgenpost , Deutschlandfunk , Südkurier , Berliner Kurier and others.

In 2019 Mauthe and AMAP initiated the Horizonta Festival in various German cities, at which well-known mountaineers, authors, nature photographers, survivival experts, reporters and activists such as Rüdiger Nehberg , Arved Fuchs , Alexander Huber , Tobias Friedrich, Marlies Czerny and Andreas Lattner, Dieter Schonlau and Sandra Hanke and Willi Weitzel present multimedia presentations. The proceeds from this festival flow exclusively into AMAP's species protection work .
