Mikayla Simpson (born February 16, 2000 ), better known as Koffee , is a Jamaican reggae singer, songwriter, rapper, DJ and guitarist from Spanish Town .

Career

Koffee was raised in Spanish Town, Eltham View, by her mother, an occasional actress, Seventh-day Adventist, and health department employee. Her first musical influences go back to her mother, who played American R&B and soul, but also classic reggae at home. She sang in her church choir, taught herself to play the guitar at the age of twelve and, inspired by the reggae singer Protoje , began to write her first lyrics.

In 2016, she won her school's talent show with her performance without knowing that the casual event in the school cafeteria was an audition. She went on to study music theory and vocal technique in her high school choir. A defining moment in her senior year in high school was when she competed against other talented artists on her school's talent show in front of around 1,000 people. She states that the show gave her the first confidence to play and perform music live.

By posting a video of her singing on Instagram, Koffee gained wider popularity. In 2017 she released her first single Legend with just her voice and acoustic guitar. The song became a viral Instagram hit in homage to Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt after reposting it on his own Instagram account. Awareness of the violence and social problems she grew up with influenced her lyrics, and alongside Protoje and Chronixx she counts Super Cat and Giggs among her musical inspirations.

In 2018 Cocoa Tea's Koffee was presented at the Reggae Festival Rebel Salute in Jamaica and at the Rototom Sunsplash in Spain. She also asked Protoje to perform with him. Chronixx invited her to appear on a broadcast for BBC Radio 1Xtra at Tuff Gong Studios, and she toured the UK with him. On November 10, 2018, Koffee performed on BBC Music Introducing Live.

This was followed by Burning , their recording from Ouji Riddim (Upsetta Records), which was best known through the artists Busy Signal and Luciano . Burning was born out of her drive, despite the disappointment of not being admitted to high school after graduating from Ardenne High School, of wanting to keep pushing forward. The song spent three weeks in June at number 1 on the Top 30 reggae charts on The Foundation Radio Network, which covers New York City and South Florida .

Her December 2018 single Raggamuffin alludes to gun violence and government neglect of youth in Jamaica. BBC Radio 1Xtra named Koffee one of 15 artists on its “Hot for 2019” list. Their next single, Toast , was produced by Walshy Fire from Major Lazer . Both Chronixx and Protoje appear in the video. In 2019 Tory Lanez produced a remix for Toast as part of his International Fargo project, which can be found on SoundCloud.

In 2018 she also signed with Columbia Records UK. Her debut EP on the label, Rapture , was released on March 14, 2019. Her video for Throne , which takes viewers on a tour of her hometown Spanish Town, was released on January 22, 2019. At the Grammy Awards in 2020 was Rapture as best reggae album award of the year.
